Russia has recently made a significant decision to regulate cryptocurrency mining by implementing a ban in 10 regions until 2031. Starting in January 2025, these restrictions are aimed at managing energy consumption effectively while prioritizing industrial needs. Additionally, temporary mining limitations will be enforced in three other regions during peak energy demand periods.
Regions Impacted by the Mining Ban
The Russian government has identified regions such as Dagestan, Chechnya, and the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics where all cryptocurrency mining activities will be prohibited.
These restrictions are part of a wider initiative to optimize energy resources while catering to industrial requirements.
Moreover, in certain areas like Irkutsk, Buryatia, and the Zabaikalsky region, mining activities will be limited during peak demand seasons, such as January to March in 2025 and November to March in subsequent years.
Adaptability in Restrictions
Officials have emphasized that the list of restricted regions may be subject to change based on recommendations from the government commission overseeing electric power management. The primary goal of these measures is to ensure a steady energy supply for industries while alleviating the strain on the energy grid caused by cryptocurrency mining.
Mining Permitted but Under Strict Regulation
This decision comes after Russia’s legalization of cryptocurrency mining in November 2023. Miners are now required to register with the Federal Tax Service, providing comprehensive information about their assets and wallet addresses.
Individual miners are allowed to operate within a monthly limit of 6,000 kWh, ensuring compliance with the country’s energy policies.
