The crackdown on a major organized crime gang that preyed on British victims has resulted in a significant breakthrough. The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) teamed up with Romanian police to raid two penthouse apartments in Bucharest, believed to be the headquarters of a fraudulent operation that targeted consumers across Europe on a large scale.
This criminal group specifically targeted individuals who had already fallen victim to investment fraud. They posed as representatives of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) or other regulatory bodies, promising to help victims recover their lost funds. However, after victims paid an upfront fee for this so-called ‘service’ and transferred the money to a cryptocurrency wallet, the fraudsters would vanish without a trace, leaving victims empty-handed.
During the raid, law enforcement officers seized a script used by the fraudsters when contacting victims, as well as evidence of high-value cryptocurrency wallets meant to deceive victims into believing that their recovered funds were available for repayment. Unfortunately, these wallets turned out to be fake.
Three Romanian nationals were interrogated by authorities regarding their involvement in orchestrating the fraudulent scheme. Suzanne Foster, NCA branch commander for the Complex Financial Crime Team, emphasized the importance of collaboration with Romanian law enforcement in disrupting this criminal group and expressed determination to track down the stolen funds to assist the victims.
Similar fraudulent tactics were recently uncovered in Ukraine, where scammers targeted cryptocurrency fraud victims through phone calls. Posing as members of the fictional ‘Community of Cryptocurrency Brokers,’ they offered to return stolen funds in exchange for a commission, only to disappear once payment was made.
Phone-based fraud, also known as vishing, has seen a significant rise in recent months. A staggering 80% of British consumers reported receiving scam calls or texts during the summer of 2021. Moreover, cybercriminals are increasingly combining phone-based fraud with traditional email phishing tactics, leading to a three-fold increase in click rates for targeted phishing campaigns when vishing is employed.
The crackdown on these organized crime gangs underscores the importance of remaining vigilant against fraudsters and adopting robust security measures to protect oneself from falling victim to financial scams. It serves as a stark reminder of the ever-evolving tactics employed by cybercriminals and the need for constant vigilance in safeguarding personal and financial information.
