Who is David Sacks?
David Sacks is a prominent South African-American entrepreneur and investor known for his significant contributions to the tech industry. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, he moved to the US at a young age, eventually settling in Tennessee with his family.
Despite initially not aspiring to be an entrepreneur, Sacks was inspired by his family’s history of entrepreneurship, particularly his grandfather who founded a candy factory in the 1920s. He attended Stanford University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics before obtaining a Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago Law School.
His career took off when he joined PayPal as its first product leader, later becoming the company’s Chief Operating Officer. Sacks played a pivotal role in PayPal’s global success in online payments. Following PayPal’s acquisition by eBay, he went on to found Yammer, a social networking platform for businesses that was later acquired by Microsoft.
In 2017, Sacks co-founded Craft Ventures, a venture capital firm that has invested in several successful technology companies. With assets under management totaling $3.3 billion as of November 2023, Craft Ventures has made significant strides in the tech investment landscape.
Aside from his venture capital endeavors, Sacks co-hosts the “All-In” podcast with other renowned venture capitalists, discussing a range of topics spanning technology, politics, and economics.
A close friend of Elon Musk
David Sacks shares a close bond with Elon Musk, stemming from their collaboration at PayPal during its early stages. Both entrepreneurs have remained connected over the years, working together on various ventures and projects.
As part of the “PayPal Mafia,” a group of influential tech entrepreneurs, Sacks and Musk have continued their entrepreneurial journeys, with Sacks supporting Musk’s acquisition of Twitter (now X) and serving as a trusted advisor during the transition.
Sacks is also known for his political contributions, notably backing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a pro-Bitcoin advocate and opponent of central bank digital currencies.
A Trump supporter
Sacks has emerged as a vocal supporter of Donald Trump’s presidency, advocating for his return to office. He believes that Trump’s policies offer better solutions to the nation’s challenges compared to the current administration’s efforts.
Citing concerns regarding the economy, foreign policy, and border security, Sacks views Trump’s leadership as vital for restoring prosperity, security, and stability in America.
On December 5, Trump appointed Sacks as the White House AI and Crypto Czar, entrusting him with shaping policies on artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies to enhance American competitiveness.
And a Bitcoin investor
David Sacks has been a longstanding supporter of cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin and Ethereum, seeing them as modern iterations of PayPal’s original vision of secure digital transactions.
His investment in Bitcoin dates back to 2012, recognizing its evolution from a niche asset to a mainstream investment opportunity. Sacks has invested in Bitcoin and other crypto assets, emphasizing the need for specialized fund managers as the crypto market matures.
He believes that Bitcoin’s decentralized nature offers a viable alternative to government-controlled currencies, mitigating risks of currency debasement and excessive money printing. Sacks views Bitcoin as a reliable financial system independent of government influence, backed by mathematical encryption rather than centralized authority.
While acknowledging Bitcoin’s strengths, Sacks also recognizes the advancements in blockchain technology and decentralized finance that have emerged alongside the flagship cryptocurrency.
