Vitalik Buterin Proposes Reducing ETH Staking Requirements on Ethereum
Recently, Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, has put forward a groundbreaking idea to drastically decrease the amount of ETH needed to become an Ethereum staker. Currently, it takes approximately 15 minutes to finalize a block, and a substantial 32 ETH is required to serve as a staker.
In a recent blog post, Buterin explains that these specifications were initially a compromise to balance three key goals: maximizing the number of validators that can stake, minimizing the time to finality, and reducing the overhead of running a node.
However, Buterin suggests that these requirements could potentially be altered in the future. He states, “Ideally, we want to preserve economic finality while simultaneously improving in two critical areas:
- Finalize blocks in one slot (ideally, maintaining or even reducing the current length of 12 seconds), instead of 15 minutes.
- Allow validators to stake with just 1 ETH, a significant decrease from the current 32 ETH requirement.
Buterin justifies the first goal by aligning Ethereum’s properties with those of more centralized, performance-focused Layer 1 chains. He explains, “It ensures that all Ethereum users benefit from the higher level of security assurances achieved through the finality mechanism. Today, most users do not benefit because they are not willing to wait 15 minutes. With single-slot finality, users will see their transactions finalized almost immediately after confirmation. Secondly, it simplifies the protocol and surrounding infrastructure if users and applications do not have to worry about the chain reverting, except in rare cases such as an inactivity leak.”
Moreover, Buterin believes that reducing the staking requirements would offer greater support to solo stakers, making the staking process more accessible and inclusive.
