FBI Arrests Two Men for $250 Million Bitcoin Heist
Recently, FBI agents made a significant breakthrough by arresting two individuals, Malone Lam and Jeandiel Serrano, for their involvement in a heist that resulted in the theft of approximately $250 million worth of Bitcoin. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia has formally charged the suspects with conspiracy to steal and launder the stolen cryptocurrency.
The elaborate scheme began on August 18th, 2024, when Lam and Serrano initiated contact with a victim in Washington D.C. Subsequently, they managed to abscond with 4,100 BTC from the unsuspecting victim. To cover their tracks, the duo employed various tactics such as utilizing mixing services and exchanges, employing peel chains, and leveraging pass-through wallets and VPNs to obfuscate the movement of funds on the blockchain.
Following the heist, Lam and Serrano indulged in a lavish lifestyle, splurging on international travel, nightclub outings, luxury vehicles, high-end watches, jewelry, designer bags, and rental properties in Los Angeles and Miami. However, their spending spree has come to an abrupt halt with their arrest.
If found guilty, the defendants will be required to forfeit all assets acquired through the illicit activities and settle a monetary judgment. This serves as a stern warning to individuals contemplating engaging in cybercrime activities and highlights the FBI’s commitment to combatting digital asset theft.
