Kamala Harris’ team is currently exploring potential candidates to replace Gary Gensler as Chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). According to sources familiar with the discussions, two individuals being considered are Chris Brummer, a Georgetown Law professor, and Erica Williams, the Chair of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB). Both Brummer and Williams are known to have more favorable views on cryptocurrencies compared to Gensler.
As of now, Vice President Harris has not made any public or private commitments regarding Gensler’s replacement. It is uncertain how seriously her team is considering Brummer, Williams, or any other candidates for the position. The focus of Harris’ campaign at the moment is on voter mobilization, while also dealing with time constraints and other policy priorities.
One source mentioned, “It’s currently unclear who the frontrunner is in the selection process. Harris’ campaign is being cautious about taking a pro-crypto stance before the election, as there is concern about potentially alienating progressive voters who view cryptocurrencies skeptically, while also not necessarily attracting undecided voters.”
