Vitalik Buterin, the co-creator of Ethereum, recently shared his thoughts on the potential of blockchain technology in the insurance industry. He highlighted the significance of insurance DAOs, stating that they are “underrated” and hold immense promise for the sector.
Modern insurance is generally asymmetric, with consumers paying fixed premiums while company shareholders benefit more from denying claims. This creates two distinct classes of participants.

The Challenges with Traditional Insurance
DAO cartographer @owocki recently criticized traditional insurance, calling it the “biggest scam in modern finance.” He advocated for the development of a transparent and fair crypto-based insurance system, highlighting how insurance companies often profit by denying legitimate claims. In response, Buterin expressed his support for Insurance DAOs, decentralized entities that offer protection against market uncertainties and aim to foster the growth of the digital asset and Web3 space.
Buterin proposed that by pooling resources and mutual support, crypto investors could establish a successful decentralized insurance-focused DAO. He emphasized that a blockchain-based insurance system would address the imbalance of incentives present in traditional insurance, where centralized firms prioritize profit over fair claim settlements. Buterin explained:
“The DAO can still employ specialized claims judges, but their incentive is fairness, as each participant is uncertain about being a claimant in the future.”
He highlighted the symmetry offered by insurance DAOs, contrasting them with traditional insurance models where customers pay fixed premiums and shareholders benefit from denying claims.
