Revolve Labs, a Bitcoin mining company based in Colorado, has unveiled plans to construct a state-of-the-art $60 million data center in Glencoe, Minnesota, as part of its expansion strategy to increase mining capacity.
The proposed data center will feature cutting-edge AI technology, advanced cooling systems, and backup generators, as reported by the Minnesota Star Tribune. The primary goal of this facility is to enhance the company’s ability to process Bitcoin transactions efficiently while addressing concerns from the local community regarding noise pollution.
Currently in the initial planning phase, the facility is estimated to employ approximately 10 individuals and could cost between $40 million and $60 million.
During a meeting with the Glencoe Economic Development Authority in September, Revolve Labs discussed the project in detail. The site, spanning 6.2 acres, will not only accommodate the data center infrastructure but also include a new power substation to support the expansion, according to the Star Tribune.
Bitcoin mining involves a resource-intensive process where specialized computers solve complex mathematical problems to validate transactions on the Bitcoin network. As a reward, miners receive Bitcoin. Data centers, like the one Revolve Labs plans to build, play a crucial role in supporting these operations that demand significant computational power and energy.
On a related note, the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis recently released a working paper on October 17, suggesting that governments consider either banning or taxing Bitcoin to maintain permanent primary deficits.
The paper characterized Bitcoin as a “balanced budget trap” that could impede policy implementation, especially for governments relying on nominal debt.

Bitcoin Mining and Noise Concerns
Mining facilities in Glencoe have sparked controversy due to noise generated by mining equipment and cooling systems, according to the Star Tribune.
Local residents have expressed worries about noise levels reaching up to 85 decibels, equivalent to the sound of a lawnmower. Revolve Labs has encountered similar complaints in other locations, such as Windom, Minnesota, where a previous expansion proposal was withdrawn following community opposition.
Similarly, Texas communities have become host to Bitcoin mining facilities, attracting companies like Marathon Digital and Hut 8 due to their low energy costs and flexible power grid.
However, the influx of mining operations in Texas has resulted in noise levels as high as 91 decibels, causing hearing loss, headaches, and sleep disturbances among residents. These health issues have particularly impacted older individuals, raising concerns about the impact of mining on community well-being.
Despite noise concerns, Revolve Labs’ operations have brought significant economic benefits to Glencoe. According to Dave Meyer, general manager of the Glencoe Light and Power Commission, the company’s mining activities have generated over $500,000 in net annual revenue for the city.
These funds have been utilized to support public infrastructure projects, including streetlight improvements, while also preventing an increase in electrical rates for local residents.
